Position Summary

At Capital Waste Services, the CDL Driver safely operates Front-End Load (FEL), Roll-Off (RO), Rear-Load (REL), and/or Automated Side-Load (ASL) collection vehicles to provide waste and recycling collection services for commercial, industrial, and residential customers. The CDL Driver is responsible for delivering exceptional customer service while maintaining compliance with all company safety standards, DOT regulations, and operational procedures.

This position requires the ability to safely navigate assigned routes, operate hydraulic collection equipment, conduct vehicle inspections, complete required documentation, and transport collected materials to designated disposal or recycling facilities.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Collection Operations

  • Safely operate Front-End Load, Roll-Off, Rear-Load, and/or Automated Side-Load collection vehicles.
  • Service customers according to assigned routes and schedules.
  • Pick up, transport, and dispose of waste, recycling, and other approved materials.
  • Operate hydraulic lifting, compaction, and container-loading equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Deliver containers, compactors, and roll-off boxes as required.
  • Ensure all routes are completed safely, efficiently, and according to service standards.

Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance

  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with DOT and company requirements.
  • Complete Vehicle Condition Reports (VCRs), DVIRs, route sheets, and other required documentation.
  • Report equipment failures, vehicle defects, accidents, or safety concerns immediately.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and professional vehicle appearance.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance checks and ensure compliance with maintenance schedules.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, state, local, and company safety regulations.
  • Utilize defensive driving techniques and safe operating procedures at all times.
  • Properly secure loads and maintain awareness of overhead, underground, and surrounding hazards.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and driver development initiatives.
  • Immediately report accidents, injuries, property damage, or environmental incidents.

Customer Service

  • Interact professionally and courteously with customers, co-workers, and the public.
  • Address service issues professionally and communicate customer concerns to management.
  • Maintain positive customer relationships while representing Capital Waste Services in the field.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Complete timesheets, route documentation, inspection reports, and fuel logs accurately.
  • Utilize electronic route management systems, tablets, and dispatch communication tools when required.
  • Maintain required certifications, licenses, and medical qualifications.


Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year commercial driving experience preferred.
  • Prior waste industry experience operating FEL, Roll-Off, Rear-Load, or ASL vehicles strongly preferred.
  • Ability to operate vehicles with manual or automatic transmissions.

Licensing & Certifications

  • Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Ability to pass DOT drug and alcohol screening requirements.
  • Ability to pass criminal background screening consistent with company requirements.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and safe driving practices.
  • Ability to operate hydraulic collection equipment safely.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong attention to safety and route efficiency.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, customers, and teammates.
  • Ability to read route sheets, maps, GPS systems, and work orders.
  • Basic mobile technology and electronic logging proficiency.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, drive, climb, bend, reach, push, pull, and lift frequently throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to enter and exit the vehicle cab multiple times per route.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
  • Ability to work around dust, noise, traffic, and landfill or transfer station environments.

Work Schedule

  • Typical schedule begins early morning and continues until route completion.
  • Overtime, weekends, emergency response, and holiday coverage may be required based on business needs.
