Job Description

The Trailer Technician II performs advanced maintenance and repairs on trailer units in compliance with Koch Companies and DOT standards. This role focuses on inspections, diagnostics, and repairs across tires, lights, bodywork, suspension, electrical systems, and more. You will work independently, maintain a safe work environment, and represent Koch Companies with professionalism.

Hiring Range:
$30.00 to $42.00 /hour (starting pay within this range will be based on relevant experience, skills, and qualifications)


Compensation Package:

Essential Job Functions

  • Practice safe work habits by adhering to all Koch Companies policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and advanced repairs, including all skills from Trailer Tech I checklist, plus:
  • DOT Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable State and Federal regulations, conducting regular inspections and repairs.
  • Brake System: Adjustments and Inspections (Air and Electric), Full Air Brake Replacement (Shoes, Pads, Drums), Air Brake Troubleshooting (Valves, Chambers, Air Lines)
  • Air Ride System Troubleshooting & Repairs
  • Landing Gear Repairs
  • Structural Repairs: Roof Patching, Floor Repairs (Wood/Composite)
  • Door Repairs: Roll-Up and Swing Door Replacement
  • Liftgate Service: Component Inspection and Repairs
  • Electrical Repairs: Trailer Wiring Issues (Lights, ABS), ABS Sensor Replacement
  • Basic Reefer/Heater Maintenance: Preventative Maintenance, Battery, Belts, Alternator
  • Order necessary parts from the parts department or use parts on-site, ensuring all items are brought to the work area.
  • Read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, technical drawings, wiring, and schematics
  • Maintain a clean work area, including putting away tools, sweeping, etc., as needed.
  • Make warranty recommendations


Secondary Job Functions

  • Serve as a representative of the Company, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions with other members of the Koch community, customers and with the public.
  • Cross training as required.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily in a temperature-controlled shop
  • Exposure to adverse weather when shop doors are open
  • Regular exposure to loud machine noises and maintenance fluid odors
  • Overtime work may be required based on business needs


Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalen
  • Minimum of 2 years of trailer maintenance experience
  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete advanced repair work


Preferred Education and Experience

  • 3 years of trailer maintenance experience
  • ASE Certification or completion of relevant technical schooling


Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment and computerized maintenance systems
  • Ability to complete advanced trailer repairs independently
  • Certification for ABS brake systems preferred
  • Understanding of DOT and FMCSA regulations related to trailer maintenance
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels of the organization
  • Professional appearance and conduct aligned with company standards
  • Eligibility to obtain Minnesota State certification for DOT inspections


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, climb under, over, and inside trailers
  • Sufficient hearing to detect alarms and verbal communication
  • Sufficient vision, with or without corrective lenses, to read small print, technical documents, and work with small parts
