Statement of Purpose: This position is responsible for the provision of patient care under the direct responsibility of a Licensed Practical Nurse and Physician. Provides HIV Prevention education and supports to patients and clients. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team to enhance patient quality of life. Supports the clinical and prevention functions as well as providing backup support to the front desk and HIM. Ensures that all documentation is compliant with professional and legal standards.
Clinical Tasks: 50% Certified Medical Assistant/Prevention Specialist
- Greet and room patients into appropriate exam rooms.
- Collect the medical information from patient phone calls and walk-ins.
- Performs medical intake procedures including labs, vital signs and history.
- Prepares patients for examinations
- Prepares chart to include all diagnostic documentation as needed for patient care.
- Assist the physician during examinations.
- Explain medical procedures to patients.
- Administer injections.
- Perform Electrocardiograms.
- Conduct tests and procedures as directed, such as EKG' venipunctures, urine dipsticks, glucometer, etc.
- Experience in Phlebotomy required.
- Performs specimen processing.
- Clean exam rooms and sterilize medical instruments.
- Maintains temperature logs for all clinic refrigerators containing specimens and medications.
- Monitors patient flow after check in.
- Practices safety, environmental and/or infection control methods.
- Documents all patient information and results accurately in the patient's chart in a timely manner.
- Prepares and distributes reports within the clinic and to the health care team as necessary.
- Prepares records/documents in response to requests from other health care providers.
- Requests diagnostic test results from other health care providers.
- Provides assistance with referrals and coordinates services with other organizations, federal and local programs.
- Maintain complete and thorough documentation on research projects.
- Manage inventory of clinical supplies.
- Performance of required medical procedures associated with research projects.
HIV Prevention Specialist Task: 50% Certified Medical Assistant/Prevention Specialist
- Implementation of HIV prevention programs.
- Manage inventory of contraceptives, brochures and other materials necessary for prevention department activities.
- Provides confidential and anonymous testing to the community.
- Provides documentation required by state and local funding sources as required.
- Assists in developing goals and objectives relative to prevention and education.
- Develops and fosters networking relationships with community and support resources.
Other Tasks: Certified Medical Assistant/Prevention Specialist
- Promotes and practices CAN's values and mission and adheres to all policies and procedures.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding patient and/or family in accordance with professional and departmental standards.
- Adheres to ethical and legal standards of practice.
- Practices safety, environmental and/or infection control methods.
- Continues professional training and education to advance knowledge and skills of HIV/AIDS.
- Willingness to work on nights and weekends as needed.
Administrative Tasks: Certified Medical Assistant/Prevention Specialist
- Provides assistance in all clinical areas.
- Assist in answering phones and scheduling appointments.
- Update Patient files as needed.
- Maintain patient medical records
- Complete all required annual trainings in a timely manner to ensure staff compliance.
- Participates in continuous quality improvement of services rendered to CAN clients.
- Utilizes resources and supplies in a cost-effective manner.
- Demonstrates courtesy, compassion and respect in all interpersonal relationships with CAN clients, staff and visitors.
- Maintains professional manner in all aspects of job tasks.
Physical Requirements: Certified Medical Assistant/Prevention Specialist
- Neat, professional appearance
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients.
- Exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Involves sitting, walking, and standing for brief periods of time.
- Requires expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word, visual and auditory acuity.
Education/Professional Experience: Certified Medical Assistant/Prevention Specialist
- Medical Assistant Certification issued by an accredited institution approved by the State of Florida, or a minimum of 3 years' experience working in a health care setting
- CPR certified.
- Valid driver's license.
- Electronic Medical Records classes through SuccessEHS.
- HIV classes through local health departments or on-line.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Certified Medical Assistant/Prevention Specialist
- Bilingual Preferred (English & Spanish)
- Strong Phlebotomy experience.
- Demonstrates knowledge of HIV medical terminology, procedures, medications and accepted treatment practices.
- Demonstrates knowledge of OSHA rules, regulations and mandates to ensure compliance.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with patients, visitors and staff members.
- Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques, be a self-starter, work effectively, organized and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.
