Position Summary:
The Yard Goat / Sit-Down Forklift Operator is responsible for safely moving trailers within the yard, operating a sit-down forklift to load and unload freight, and supporting warehouse shipping and receiving operations while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate a yard goat (terminal tractor) to move trailers to and from loading docks and designated yard locations.
- Operate a sit-down forklift to load, unload, transport, and stage pallets and materials.
- Verify trailer numbers, dock assignments, and shipment documentation before moving equipment.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the yard goat and forklift, reporting any mechanical or safety concerns.
- Load and unload inbound and outbound trucks while ensuring freight is properly secured and damage-free.
- Stack, wrap, label, and stage pallets for shipment.
- Assist with shipping, receiving, inventory control, and order fulfillment as needed.
- Use RF scanners, warehouse management systems (WMS), or shipping documents to track inventory and shipments.
- Ensure trailers are properly chocked, secured, and docked before loading or unloading.
- Maintain accurate records of trailer movements, equipment inspections, and completed tasks.
- Follow OSHA regulations and all company safety policies and procedures.
- Keep warehouse and yard areas clean, organized, and free of hazards.
- Work closely with dispatch, warehouse supervisors, and shipping personnel to prioritize trailer movements and shipping schedules.
- Assist with cycle counts and inventory reconciliation when required.
- Perform additional warehouse duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience operating a yard goat and sit-down forklift.
- Valid forklift certification preferred.
- Experience in warehouse, distribution, or 3PL environments is preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of shipping, receiving, and warehouse safety procedures.
- Experience using RF scanners and warehouse management systems is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work overtime and weekends as needed.
