Job Description

The Welder Foreman oversees and performs MIG welding on structural steel within a busy fabrication shop, ensuring high-quality welds, accurate fit-up, and safe handling of large structural components. This role combines hands-on welding and fitting work with the responsibility to interpret blueprints and weld symbols, support material handling operations, and contribute to the efficient production of large-scale structural steel assemblies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform MIG welding on structural steel components using a wire feed gun in accordance with project specifications and welding procedures.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and welding symbols to determine weld locations, sizes, and techniques required for each assembly.
  • Fit up structural steel based on welding blueprints, ensuring correct alignment, dimensions, and joint preparation prior to welding.
  • Assist with unloading and moving structural beams and parts throughout the plant using an overhead crane and proper rigging practices.
  • Set up, operate, and adjust welding equipment and tools to achieve consistent, high-quality welds on complex structural assemblies.
  • Perform tack welding and fitting to hold components in place prior to final welding, maintaining accuracy and structural integrity.
  • Use flux core and MIG welding processes as needed for various fabrication tasks within the weld shop.
  • Inspect welds and structural assemblies for quality, accuracy, and compliance with drawings and weld symbols, and correct any deficiencies.
  • Work collaboratively with other welders, fitters, and fabrication staff to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and safe crane and rigging practices, to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are stored and handled properly.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of recent MIG welding experience.
  • At least 2 years of recent structural steel welding experience.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and weld symbols.
  • Hands-on experience using a MIG wire feed gun to weld structural steel.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform structural steel fit up based on welding blueprints.
  • Experience working in a structural welding or fabrication shop environment.
  • Knowledge of flux core and MIG welding processes for structural applications.
  • Ability to assist with rigging and operating an overhead crane to move structural beams safely.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds and accurate assemblies.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment consistently.

Work Environment

This role is based in a non-climate-controlled fabrication and weld shop focused on large structural steel production. The standard schedule is 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some Saturdays as needed to meet production demands. Work involves operating in a busy shop environment with overhead cranes moving structural beams and parts throughout the plant. You use modern welding and fabrication equipment while adhering to strict safety practices. Personal protective equipment is required, including steel-toe footwear, hard hat, safety glasses, and gloves.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cocoa, FL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
