Job Summary:
The HVAC Selling Technician is a dual-role position responsible for providing expert
technical service, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems while also identifying and
closing sales opportunities. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with
consultative sales skills to drive revenue growth through equipment upgrades, service
contracts, and system replacements. The Selling Technician serves as a trusted advisor
to customers, educating them on system performance, efficiency improvements, and
investment options while delivering exceptional technical service.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Service & Maintenance:
1. Service, maintain, and repair HVAC systems according to manufacturer
specifications and local codes, ensuring optimal performance and customer
satisfaction.
2. Perform comprehensive system diagnostics to identify equipment issues,
component failures, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
3. Conduct routine preventative maintenance to ensure system longevity,
efficiency, and compliance with manufacturer warranties and service
agreements.
4. Test HVAC systems thoroughly to verify proper operation, performance
standards, energy efficiency, and code compliance.
5. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all work performed, including parts
used, time spent, system conditions, and recommendations for future service
or upgrades.
6. Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area while adhering to all
safety guidelines, regulations, and company protocols.
Sales & Business Development:
7. Identify and pursue sales opportunities during service calls by assessing
customer needs, system performance, and potential for equipment upgrades
or replacements.
8. Present and sell service agreements, maintenance contracts, and protection
plans to customers, emphasizing value, cost savings, and peace of mind.
9. Educate customers on system efficiency, energy savings opportunities, indoor
air quality solutions, and the benefits of modern HVAC technology.
10. Prepare and present detailed estimates and proposals for system
replacements, upgrades, and add-on products such as air purifiers,
de-humidifiers, and smart thermostats.
11. Close sales on-site when possible, utilizing consultative sales techniques,
overcoming objections, and demonstrating ROI for customers.
12. Generate qualified leads and sales opportunities for the sales team when
projects exceed the technician's scope or require additional expertise.
13. Achieve individual sales targets and performance metrics established by
management, including service agreement sales, equipment sales, and
accessory sales.
14. Utilize CRM software to track customer interactions, log sales opportunities,
update account information, and follow up on pending quotes and proposals.
Customer Relations & Support:
15. Build and maintain strong customer relationships through professionalism,
integrity, technical expertise, and exceptional service delivery.
16. Communicate clearly with customers about system conditions, repair options,
costs, and timelines, ensuring they understand all recommendations and can
make informed decisions.
17. Provide technical guidance and education to customers on proper system
operation, maintenance best practices, and ways to maximize equipment
lifespan and efficiency.
18. Address customer concerns promptly and professionally, working to resolve
issues and ensure complete satisfaction with service and sales interactions.
19. Represent the company professionally at all times, maintaining a positive
brand image and upholding company values in all customer interactions.
Team Collaboration & Development:
20. Coordinate with other technicians, service personnel, and the sales team to
schedule installations, share technical insights, and support larger projects.
21. Mentor and assist less experienced technicians in technical skills and
consultative selling techniques, sharing best practices and lessons learned.
22. Stay current on industry trends, new HVAC technologies, energy efficiency
standards, building codes, and sales techniques through ongoing training and
professional development.
23. Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and company events to
support continuous improvement and maintain alignment with company goals
and strategies.
Skills & Qualifications:
Advanced proficiency in HVAC system troubleshooting, repair, installation,
and maintenance across multiple equipment types and brands.
Strong sales abilities including consultative selling, needs assessment,
objection handling, closing techniques, and relationship building.
Exceptional customer service orientation with excellent communication,
interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills with the ability to
diagnose complex system issues and develop effective solutions.
Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC system design, installation practices,
maintenance procedures, and energy efficiency principles.
Proficiency with CRM software, mobile applications, digital tools, and
Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, communication, and reporting.
Self-motivated with strong time management and organizational abilities to
balance technical service work with sales activities.
Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a
team to achieve individual and company goals.
Valid driver's license with clean driving record and ability to operate company
vehicle safely and responsibly.
EPA certification and relevant HVAC licenses as required by state and local
regulations.
