Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Radiation Protection (RP) Division supports critical Laboratory missions by ensuring safe work environments through the identification, evaluation, and control of radiological hazards. We are seeking Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) to join the RP Programs (RP-PROG) organization. In this role, you will support a wide variety of radiological work activities across multiple facilities, applying radiation protection principles to ensure safe operations. This position will be filled at either level 4 or level 5, depending on the selected candidate s experience. This is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM, with salary ranges as follows:
Radiological Control Technician 4: $80,400 $127,900
Radiological Control Technician 5: $96,600 $158,000
Responsibilities for Radiological Control Technician 4:
Provide radiological job coverage and support field implementation of the Radiation Protection Program
Perform workplace radiological surveys and document radiological data
Implement radiation monitoring, contamination control, and personnel exposure controls
Support execution of radiation work permits and other radiological work documents
Assist and mentor less experienced RCTs in radiological protection practices
Collaborate with multiple work groups to ensure safe and compliant operations
Work in varying environments and conditions, including use of personal protective equipment
Additional Responsibilities for Radiological Control Technician 5:
Serve as the primary Radiation Protection point of contact for radiological work activities
Support job planning, coordinate resources, and resolve complex radiological issues
Provide technical leadership and oversight to less experienced RCTs
Ensure compliance with radiological procedures and regulatory requirements
Lead complex radiological activities and contribute to program improvements
Qualifications
Radiological Control Technician 4:
High school diploma and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience providing radiological support for moderate- and high-hazard work environments
Senior-level knowledge of radiation protection principles and practices
Experience in radiation monitoring, contamination control, and personnel exposure management
Ability to communicate radiological safety concepts effectively to all levels of personnel
Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations, evaluate solutions, and resolve radiological safety issues
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection
Proficiency with computer-based office applications
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (U.S. citizenship required)
Radiological Control Technician 5:
High school diploma and a minimum of 6 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Advanced-level expertise in radiation protection principles and multiple health physics areas
Demonstrated leadership experience in coordinating complex radiological activities
Proven ability to provide technical direction and mentorship to other RCTs
Strong problem-solving, planning, and program improvement capabilities
All qualifications, skills, and experience demonstrated at an advanced level
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (U.S. citizenship required)
Desired Qualifications:
Prior DOE Radiological Control Technician experience
Active DOE Q clearance
Current DOE Core Certification
NRRPT (National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists) certification
Familiarity with LANL policies, practices, and procedures
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe PDF software
Associate degree in a technical field involving math and/or science
