Job Title: Quality Control Laboratory Technician

Job Description

The Quality Control Laboratory Technician works in a chemical laboratory environment performing inspections and quality tests on batches of ink, incoming raw materials, aqueous and UV coatings, pressroom chemistry products, and other related materials. This role plays a key part in ensuring product quality and consistency while collaborating daily with operations and technical teams.

Responsibilities

  • Test random samples from production batches and lots of UV and water-based inks, coatings, and adhesives, and recommend adjustments according to established quality standards.
  • Inspect incoming raw materials to support purchase decisions and help reduce quality variability.
  • Follow testing procedures outlined in the Quality Manual and proactively suggest improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  • Evaluate the performance of new formulas and inspection plans and collaborate with formulators and operations teams on their improvement.
  • Document and record quality control test results for raw materials, intermediates, and finished goods in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Support the investigation and resolution of internal and external quality complaints.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and laboratory protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain a tidy, organized, and safe workspace, including proper handling and storage of chemicals and materials.
  • Perform additional tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the company or direct supervisor.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with analytical testing methods, including UV-Vis analysis, titration, and wet chemistry techniques.
  • Knowledge of coatings, color, and ink quality control principles.
  • Ability to distinguish subtle color nuances to support accurate quality assessments.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in testing, documentation, and reporting.
  • Ability to follow written testing procedures and quality manuals consistently.
  • Effective communication skills to interact daily with operations and technical employees.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory safety practices and safe handling of chemicals.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Two-year or four-year bachelor's degree in a science-related field required.
  • Chemistry degree or equivalent work experience is highly relevant.
  • Biology degree is also acceptable for candidates with applicable laboratory or industry experience.
  • Applicants with extensive inks or coatings experience may be considered in lieu of some formal education requirements.
  • Ideally 6 months to 1 year of industry experience in inks, coatings, or a related laboratory environment (preferred but not required).
  • Experience in chemistry or related sciences supporting analytical testing and quality control.

Work Environment

This role is based in a chemical laboratory environment that is hands-on and production-oriented rather than a pristine research lab. Lab coats and personal protective equipment are provided and may get dirty with inks and coatings during daily work. The technician works alongside other laboratory technicians in a lab area that is separate from the production line, allowing close collaboration with operations without being on the manufacturing floor full time. The position follows a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
