The Pavilion and North Tower house a state-of-the-art emergency department, ICU, Cardiac Cath Lab and surgical suites A teaching facility in affiliation with the Texas A&M University System Health and Science Center College of Medicine Accredited Chest Pain Center Accredited Joint Commission Stroke Team Summary: Under the guidance and direction of the Clinical Laboratory Lead, The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I performs routine laboratory procedures including specimen processing and handling, testing of patient specimens, calculating, and reporting of results, performance of quality control procedures, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment, assisting in the development of new procedures and protocols, may perform phlebotomy and other patient-oriented tasks, and may perform other related duties as requested or directed. Performs routine laboratory procedures in the primary section to which assigned about age or sex specific values. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and equipment and makes minor repairs as necessary or notifies Bio-med as needed. Must cross-train to other laboratory sections as needed. Assures that the laboratory's quality control program is properly followed. Calculates, enters, and/or verifies results of laboratory procedures. Utilizes the Laboratory Information System. Provides notification and documentation of critical laboratory values obtained. Processes patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution always cognizant of minimal pediatric specimen volumes (when required). Participates in the evaluation, development, and implementation of new or updated testing procedures and protocols. Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department. Appropriately adapts assigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age specific and other developmental needs of each patient served. Job Requirements: Education/Skills Bachelor's Degree or higher in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 (includes U.S. Military laboratory training courses of at least 50 weeks) OR Education that has been evaluated by an acceptable credentialing agency and deemed equivalent to a US Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology OR Meets the educational requirements of a Medical Laboratory Technician II (MLT-II) Experience No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by NAACLS, or other organizations approved by HHS OR One year of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last 5 years OR 5 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications Must possess Certification for MT, MLS, CLS, or MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS within 1 year of hire If certification with an expiration date is held, the certification must be maintained and kept current Louisiana requires State Licensure New Graduate that is Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification in 1 year of hire, Louisiana excluded) Work Schedule: MULTIPLE SHIFTS AVAILABLE Work Type: Full Time

Description Summary: Is trained to perform processing blood and other body fluids, send outs, and other tests as required. Obtains blood samples from the correct patient, ensuring that the blood is properly drawn and labeled following established procedures to assure the proper specimen for the requested testing. Is trained to become competent at venipunctures and skin punctures. May register and interview patients, obtaining accurate demographic and financial information. May be required to verify medical necessity for all Medicare patients. Responsibilities: Performs daily phlebotomy procedures and tests on a fluctuating work schedule. Obtains an adequate specimen on all patients, including correct timed specimens when indicated. Observes established personnel policies, OSHA requirements, and lab procedures to ensure safe practice. Assures proper identification of patient and specimens in accordance with established laboratory identification procedures, and cares for patients promptly and courteously. Maintains integrity of specimens while processing specimens. Assures correct identification of specimens and distributes specimens to the proper department or correct reference laboratory. Plates and smears to appropriate media all specimens received for culturing. Processes microbiology specimens when assigned. Processes sendout testing when necessary. Answer Pneumatic tube system at all times. Assists in orienting of new personnel as directed by the lead tech or lab director. Continuously practices universal precautions. Follows all hospital, section, and safety policies and procedures. Is trained in the following skills: Age specific criteria for all age groups, fingersticks, heel sticks, venipuncture, blood cultures, syringe collections and the use of butterflies. Registers and interviews patients, obtaining accurate demographic financial information. Performs therapeutic phlebotomies. Stock drawing stations and outpatient rest rooms. Maintain phlebotomy area, trays area in orderly and useable condition. Maintains a system of inventory control of assigned areas. Assumes responsibility for neatness and cleanliness of patient area. Follows hospital safety policy including wearing gloves while performing phlebotomy and utilizes only safeguard needles and syringes. Follows needlestick policy in the event of needlestick or mucous membrane exposure. Contacts patients or nursing stations for additional specimens, if necessary. Performs daily clerical duties which may include entering results into computer, receiving specimens, answering the telephone, printing logs, looking up results, monitoring label printing, problem solving and assisting office personnel as needed. Reports to CLS, CLT, or Supervisor any irregularities encountered in performing daily workload. Maintains a clean work area. Helps to unpack and distribute laboratory supplies. Performs other duties as assigned. Requirements: Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: Relevant experience preferred. Ability to register patients, obtain specimens and dispense critical information in accordance with section, laboratory, and hospital policies and procedures. Description Summary: Performs clinical testing in assigned section/s such as general laboratory, Blood Bank and Microbiology sections, with all duties necessary for accurate and timely results including quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventative maintenance of equipment. Recognizes abnormal critical values and follows proper guidelines for notifying medical team members of results. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily operations in the laboratory. Provides/dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff. Performs, analyzes, and records QC according to Policy & Procedure following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; performs and records Performance Improvement indicators and reports results. Performs established daily and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation; troubleshoots minor problems and initiates service calls as needed; orders (or notifies assigned associate) and restocks supplies/reagents; reviews policy & procedure manual; dates reagents and discards expired reagents. Takes responsibility for seeking and achieving professional growth and continued education. Assists in training new associates and students in Laboratory practices. Follows CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards. Follows established protocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, and the use of hazardous materials. Utilizes LIS and HIS computer systems appropriately to perform, charge, and report laboratory results. Completes annual competency assessment successfully and by assigned date. Job Requirements: Education/Skills Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489: Successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician); OR 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing. Experience No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by NAACLS, or other organizations approved by HHS. OR Six Months of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last 5 years.
