San Miguel Power Association, Inc. is seeking to fill Mechanic (Nucla location)
Job Summary
This position:
- Reviews and is responsible for the inspection, diagnostic and performs repair work and maintenance for cars, trucks, and equipment in the company's fleet.
- Performs maintenance and repairs to equipment per the manufacturers guidelines to ensure safety and reliability.
Minimum Job Specifications
This job requires:
- Must be a high school graduate or equivalent and a technical vocational or trade school diploma or degree in automotive truck and/or heavy equipment service repair and maintenance is highly desirable.
- Five years of experience or a combination of relevant education and experience is required.
- Extensive knowledge of all phases of auto and truck repair such as: tune-ups, brakes, charging system, lighting system, fuel and carburetor, exhaust, vehicle diagnostics and starting system.
- Welding experience preferred.
- Computer skills adequate to perform necessary tasks including fleet tracking, electronic maintenance records and other general computer programs.
- Working knowledge of OSHA requirements as they impact the mechanic's shop and fleet.
- The ability to work without direct supervision.
- Excellent organization, written and verbal communication skills.
- Certification to operate a forklift.
- To obtain and maintain a valid Colorado Class A CDL driver's license.
- The employee to represent the co-op in a progressive, positive, and professional manner in all relationships, both internal and external.
Essential Job Functions

The Mechanic:
- Performs maintenance and repairs of company vehicles and equipment.
- Performs other miscellaneous welding and mechanic work as required.
- Inspects company equipment in accordance with established procedures, preventative maintenance, and DOT standards.
- Recognizes and identify problems with equipment and makes the necessary repairs.
- Assists with repair and maintenance reports and maintaining current records of all vehicles.
- Responsible for recordkeeping, scheduling of work and ordering parts.
- Schedules timely and routine maintenance on all SMPA vehicles and equipment and performs maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Occasionally delivers material to SMPA locations and job sites.
- Inspects and replaces company tools in accordance with established procedures.
- May assist in unloading material trucks when needed.
- Maintains a safe work environment by adhering to policies, procedures and regulations.
- Maintain shop area in neat and clean condition making sure that hazardous working conditions do not exist.
- Provide building and grounds maintenance when necessary and make repairs as needed to association property.
- Provides additional groundmen help when line crew is short-handed, if necessary, without interfering with the need of shop.
- Delivers fleet equipment on location or to other facilities within the service territory.
- Transports vehicles for service or maintenance as needed.
- May be required to report to alternate SMPA locations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills
The Mechanic will have:
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Computer skills adequate to perform necessary tasks including fleet tracking, electronic maintenance records and other general computer programs.
- Knowledge of all phases of auto and truck repair such as: tune-ups, brakes, charging system, lighting system, fuel and carburetor, exhaust, vehicle diagnostics and starting system.
- Welding experience.
- Excellent organization, written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to understand and read SDS sheets on chemicals used.
- Working knowledge of the policies and procedures of San Miguel Power Association.
- The understanding and application of the concept of providing quality electric service to SMPA members and superior customer service.
Essential Mental & Physical Requirements
The Mechanic requires:
- Strenuous physical labor, including heavy lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, hearing, talking, seeing, smelling, crawling, pushing, pulling and grasping.
- Attention to detail on a daily basis.
- The employee to read, write legibly and evaluate situations.
- 75% of the work is performed indoors, while 25% is performed outdoors, possibly under adverse weather conditions.
- To work while various mechanical and electrical hazards are present.
- To use various chemicals in routine maintenance of vehicles.
- Travel by company vehicles.
- Occasional travel by commercial means.
- Travel to other SMPA locations on a regular basis.
