POSITION PURPOSE:
- To supervise the personnel performing cytology and cytology prep, while ensuring quality laboratory service.
- Perform cytologic evaluation of specimens in accordance with departmental testing procedures and policies.
- Prepare diagnostic reports.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Cytotechnology; or Certified in Cytotechnology by an HHS approved agency; or "Qualified Cytotechnologist" prior to September 1, 1992, i.e. High School graduate with 6 months cytology training in a laboratory directed by pathologist of ASC certified physician and 2 years of full-time supervised experience or equivalent between 9/1/87 and 9/1/92.
- At least 3 years full time experience as a cytotechnologist in the last 10 years.
- Must be analyzed for color perception.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Monitors performance of department quality control, proficiency testing, maintenance procedures, and safety policies to ensure completion and accuracy.
- Responsible for staffing and scheduling of appropriately qualified personnel to ensure sufficient coverage of department.
- Conducts periodic performance evaluations according to Laboratory management's protocol.
- Maintains communication with Laboratory management as liaison for department employees.
- Responsible for evaluating Laboratory instrumentation and procedures and coordinating information for analysis with Laboratory management.
- Conduct periodic cost accounting for Laboratory management to facilitate financial analysis.
- Coordinates training and orientation of new department personnel to ensure consistent application of department procedures and laboratory policies.
- Responsible for necessary disciplinary actions in department which may require any or all of the following: counseling, additional training, warnings, suspension, or termination.
- Coordinates continuing education workshops and training of department employees to ensure all employees are current with changes in department procedures and laboratory policies.
- Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the laboratory operation and personnel performing testing and reporting test results.
- Provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with Laboratory policies and procedures.
- Perform microscopic evaluation of cytologic specimens according to laboratory procedures and workload policies.
- Prepare a final diagnosis on negative/normal gynecologic specimens. Prepare provisional diagnosis on all other cases and refers these for review. Enter the diagnosis into the computer.
- Correlate reports of biopsy specimens with cytology reports.
- Maintain the archiving and retrieval of completed reports, both normal and abnormal for follow-up analysis or client requested copies.
- Maintain absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting results and observes professional discretion with patient information.
- Complete work consistently within acceptable time limits.
- Follow all established policies of department Quality Assurance protocol. Maintain accurate individual workload and other appropriate records as required by the laboratory and various regulatory agencies.
- Perform and document routine maintenance on microscopes and other laboratory equipment to ensure optimal instrument operation.
- Document the slide interpretation results of each gynecologic and non- gynecologic cytologic case examined or reviewed.
- Document the total number of slides examined in the laboratory for each 24-hour period as well as the number of slides examined in any other laboratory. Document the number of hours spent examining slides in each 24-hour time period.
- Contribute to the efficient operation of the Laboratory.
- Participate in department meetings and Laboratory committee activities to maintain continuity, consistency, and communication within and outside the department.
- Observe strict safety precautions when handling biological specimens and chemicals.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area according to safety standards and Laboratory image requirements.
