Department Information

Enterprise Windows Administration (EWA) is a team of 16 staff within University Information Technology Services (UITS) which manages approximately 900 Windows servers consisting of a wide variety of Windows vended and internally developed application and database servers, as well as support of several Indiana University development teams.

Job Summary

The Enterprise Database Administration Team supports all Indiana University enterprise database systems which run on a wide variety of relational database management systems, operating systems and hardware platforms (Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, Linux, Windows Server, etc.). As an extension of our charter, the team also provides database technology consulting services to other application development areas distributed across the University and often acts as a liaison between the application and infrastructure divisions.

The EWA Principal Database Admin will work with various development teams and system administrators to perform a variety of administrative functions including health and performance monitoring, backups, replication, and Availability Groups. This includes automation, where possible, to ensure a stable highly available Microsoft SQL Environment.

The primary responsibilities of the Principal Database Analyst focus on the support and ongoing operations of the University Database environment. Working independently, the incumbent will provide project leadership and highly specialized technical expertise in the administration of enterprise database systems that provision mission critical enterprise level applications and services. Additionally, will conduct technology research and development, and provide automation, virtualization, standardization and consolidation recommendations to their direct management. This position will serve as an experienced resource for problem diagnosis and resolution of issues arising from the deployment and operation of database applications and the incumbent will be expected to lucidly share and facilitate knowledge transfer between themselves and other staff members.

Given the mission critical nature of enterprise database systems, this position requires occasional work before and after traditional daily office hours, including weekends and holidays. This position also requires shared, "on-call" responsibilities and works to resolves issues impeding the delivery of production services or high priority UITS projects. Examples of on-call activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Performing needed hardware or software maintenance, installation, and upgrades activities.
  • Supporting the implementation of new software services and applications as required by customers.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Business Systems, or related discipline and five years of experience in the areas of direct database administration.

Combinations of education and related experience may be considered.

Demonstrated problem-solving and technical trouble-shooting skills combined with a strong work-ethic and the ability to learn. Demonstrated ability with Enterprise Class Relational Database Management Systems and a working knowledge of any standard SDLC process. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Excellent ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Willingness to work as part of a team in a dynamic and complex environment. Ability to work with a variety of people with varying degrees of technical knowledge. Ability to assume project leadership for projects and work at the highest level of technical complexity. High levels of accuracy, dependability and responsibility. Ability to function on multi-disciplinary projects and participate as requested in ad-hoc committees.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, SQL scripting, database replication, AlwaysOn Availability Groups, Azure SQL Server, VS Code, PowerShell, Oracle, Linux and Windows Server. Knowledge of, and practical experience with, project management tools and application development methodologies.

Working Conditions / Demands

Equipment utilized: Workstations, servers, monitors, routers, printers, copiers, fax machines and other related equipment. This position is responsible for systems housed in two data centers, IUDC at IUB, as well as at ICTC at IUPUI.

Primary Functions include: Reading (documents or instruments), detailed technical work, problem solving and trouble-shooting, stress, self-training, math, reasoning, communications, customer interaction, multitasking with constant interruption. Attendance, remaining stationary (particularly for long periods of time) and keyboarding (working with a computer keyboard and monitor for extended periods of time).
