Enterprise Windows Administration (EWA) is a team of 16 staff within University Information Technology Services (UITS) which manages approximately 900 Windows servers consisting of a wide variety of Windows vended and internally developed application and database servers, as well as support of several Indiana University development teams.
Job Summary
The Principal DevOps Systems Administrator works independently at the highest level on all phases of system administration (i.e. Windows or Linux) to provide highly specialized technical expertise when collaborating, leading and ensuring the successfully delivery of various university applications and services for faculty, staff and students on all campuses of Indiana University. The Principal DevOps Systems Administrator establish team technologies for task automation, configuration maintenance, scripting, framework development, and database management. The Principal DevOps Systems Administrator leads in the oversight and documenting the security and integrity of the systems, including security compliance.
The Principal DevOps Systems Administrator will perform as the highest technical resource for UITS systems which support mission critical environments for the university. The position is responsible for developing and maintaining scripts involved in building, configuration, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of a wide variety of servers and systems, such as web servers, database servers, and file, print and application servers.
This position will have a highly visible role to communicate and consult and to lead tactical and strategic planning by working with peers in OVPIT, UITS and other university functional units to design robust system environments for the support of core academic mission of the University. The Principal DevOps Systems Administrator will have to establish collegial relationships with his/her counterparts in the other areas, balancing advocacy for his/her area with the need to cooperate in the management of extremely complex interrelated systems. This position mentors and coaches other staff within the team.
Many of these systems require continuous operation/high availability and 24 x 7 x 365 support. As such, the Principal DevOps Systems Administrator must be able to maintain a flexible work schedule. This position serves as a Point of Contact for the DevOps operations team. Supported servers/systems are located in both Bloomington and Indianapolis, necessitating occasional travel.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Business Systems, or related discipline and five years of systems analysis and administration (i.e. Windows or Linux) experience, scripting, or software development.
Combinations of education and related experience may be considered.
Demonstrable experience in analyzing complex problems and producing concrete, actionable solutions. Experience leading detailed requirements and specification activities. Experience in resolving highly complex integration issues involving multiple technologies and cross-unit coordination. Expert knowledge in administration of systems including; building, configuration, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of a wide variety of servers and systems, such as web servers, database servers, file and print servers, virtualization hosts and remote desktop farms. Expert knowledge of various computer systems, storage systems, backup systems, network systems, network protocol and software interfaces. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Excellent ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Willingness to work as part of a team in a dynamic and complex environment is required. Ability to work with a variety of people with varying degrees of technical knowledge. Ability to assume project leadership for projects and work at the highest level of technical complexity. High levels of accuracy, problem-solving, dependability and responsibility.
Preferred Qualifications
The EWA DevOps System Administrator will work with a team of Developers, DBAs, and System Administrators to manage all aspects of the Enterprise Applications Development Pipeline, in addition to day-to-day administration of Windows Servers using scripting tools, infrastructure as code, et cetera.
Experience with the following technologies: PowerShell, CI/CD, Azure DevOps, Containers, Ansible, Automation, Markdown, Windows and Linux, Desired State Configuration, SQL Scripting and Administration, scripting API integrations.
Industry standard certifications. Foundation of project management skills. Demonstrable knowledge with scripting, network protocols, web servers, transaction processors, authentication, firewall and load balancing.
Working Conditions / Demands
Equipment utilized: Workstations, servers, networking, virtualized systems, network storage, monitors, routers, printers, copiers, fax machines and other related equipment. This position is responsible for systems across all Indiana University campuses.
