Job Description

The Animal Resource Center (ARC) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas is seeking an Assistant Director Animal Care. This person will join other members of the leadership team and be responsible for overseeing the husbandry staff in one of the largest biomedical research programs in the country that continues to expand. Operating 11 vivariums totaling over 250,000 sq. ft. of space and having 230+ employees in the department will provide the opportunity for the right candidate to excel in their animal facility management career.



Duties of the position include the following:

  • Provides direction for the daily operation of the animal care and husbandry program.
  • Provides strategic oversight for all animal housing facilities.
  • Relieve Director of wide variety of internal duties and large volume of decisions, which require thorough understanding of ARC animal care and husbandry program.
  • Complete and coordinate complex projects and reports, which may require significant contact with other departments and outside organizations.
  • Develop changes to operational policies for the ARC animal care and husbandry programs.
  • Oversee the interviewing, hiring, training and mentoring of management/supervisors of animal care staff. Participates in interviewing and hiring animal care and husbandry staff. Reviews employee performance and makes recommendations for promotions.
  • Communicates daily with faculty and investigators to determine project requirements for animal resources, housing and care. Manages the allocation of animal housing space for all investigators on campus.
  • Oversee subordinate managers/supervisors within the animal care program.


Qualifications:

Bachelor s degree in animal related field preferred. Ten years of experience in an animal care facility/operations to include five years in a supervisory/management role. Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) and Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification required.
