Job DescriptionJob Description Our client, a world-renowned cancer treatment and research center is seeking a Medical Lab Assistant to join their team. This is a 6-month temp position. The work schedule is Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm. The pay rate is $25.00 per hour. One (1)-two (2) years of experience in a clinical laboratory as a Laboratory Technician, Laboratory Assistant, or related job is required. Job Summary: Processing of patient samples for analysis. This includes reviewing appropriateness of requests, accessioning, centrifugation, aliquoting, placing samples on analyzers, performed waived lab tests, archiving and sample preparation for specimens sent to another laboratory for testing. Maintains competency in the assigned duties in the laboratory; record keeping of reagents, chemicals and instrument Service Contracts; telephone coverage and other related duties. Works under direct supervision of senior technologist, laboratory Supervisor or manager of the clinical laboratory. Accessioning: -Reviews Order Entry orders and requisitions, verifies accuracy of corresponding specimens, and enters required data into computer as detailed in the laboratory's standard operating procedures. -Receives and, if necessary, accessions all samples as soon as they arrive in the laboratory. Follows established procedures for accessioning specimens in the laboratory computer system. -Reviews all test requests thoroughly for errors, omissions, clarity, and potential problems. -Checks that test requests are appropriate for specimen received and that specimen meets all requirements before proceeding with accessioning (e.g., assures correct specimens based on color of tube top against requested tests). -Contacts physicians and/or nurses to obtain necessary information and or additional specimens as needed. Documents the information correctly. -Prioritizes STAT/RUSH samples for immediate processing, per laboratory guidelines. -Accurately enters into the computer the correct information such as order test codes, copy to, and billing information, according to laboratory guidelines. Generates labels. -Follows patient identification practices as detailed in Standard Operating Procedures Manual. Verifies that the name on requisition or Order Entry order matches the name on specimen and on all specimen labels. Maintains 100% accuracy on all labeling of specimens and computer entry. Discards unlabeled specimens and notifies physician/nurse immediately. -Follows all applicable laboratory, departmental, and institutional policies and procedures related to billing. Participates in and promotes the prevention, detection, and resolution of instances of noncompliance with laboratory, departmental, and institutional billing policies and procedures. -Follows established credit procedures when criteria for satisfactory specimen are not met. -Maintains patient and HIV confidentiality according to laboratory policy. -Always follows Patient Confidentiality guidelines. Releases information only to those who are authorized. Accesses patient information on a need-to-know basis. Discards all confidential patient information according to Laboratory Confidentiality policy. -Notifies supervisor of any problems that occur during the accessioning process. Specimen Preparation and Processing: -Prepares specimens for testing or sending out to another laboratory for testing. -Reviews name on labels and attaches labels to appropriate specimen tubes. -Places and sorts labeled specimens on racks and transports to appropriate processing area. -Maintains 100% accuracy on all labeling of specimens. -Alerts technologists of STAT requests to ensure prompt processing and analysis. -Centrifuges specimens following the procedures detailed in the Standard Operating Procedures Manual. - Prepares specimens for sending out to another laboratory utilizing the laboratory computer system. -Properly aliquots the specimens according to specimen requirements. -Sorts specimens according to location. -Schedule pickup of specimens (e.g., main lab STAT specimens, reference laboratories). Responsibilities: -Conducts experimental tests for Investigators' using existing techniques. -Prepares laboratory equipment, instruments, solutions, stains, assays and other supplies as instructed for research experiments. -Work may involve culture and/or cell separation methods; electrophoretic separations: assays (e.g., RIA, TIA, ELISA); basic biology or other specialized science techniques depending on the lab. -Operates lab equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balancers, scintillation counters, spectrophotometers, light microscopes and other equipment as instructed. -May isolate and purify substances. -May be involved in animal handling requiring injection of animals, collection/harvesting of tissues, fluids; animal autopsies in order to make chemical identification and conduct analyses. -Responds to and completes tasks as instructed by the P.I. and staff associated with designated research projects by carrying out the requested activities. -Provides assistance with other on-going research for peers and research personnel in the laboratory by completing tasks related to the projects within the deadline specified. Performs necessary analysis and calculations, records data and writes reports on research findings. -Responds to and produces reports comprising of the requested statistics for the study as requested by the laboratory head and members of the research team. -Performs queries of pertinent data/information that is correctly formatted and presented according to the preference of the lab head; may recommend changes and/or additions to established data fields. -Responsible for purchasing equipment and materials for the laboratory. -Assists Administrative Assistant in generation of purchase order information for supplies and equipment by gathering information for online purchase requisitions that should be available for scheduled experiments. -Assists in tracking expenditures for the laboratory by entering the purchased items in a database such as Excel and maintaining a log of the purchases ordered for the laboratory. -Informs senior personnel on the necessary purchases and changes in the use of equipment and supplies by testing the equipment needed for the laboratory experiments. -Follow the guidelines for expenditures by obtaining prior approval for all items to remain within the annual budget for the laboratory.
