Responsibilities As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will use your creativity to innovate next generation prototypes for space, airborne, and ground systems. This opportunity requires initiative and creativity along with foundations in analysis. This opportunity is for a Mechanical Design Engineer to be part of Aerospace's xLab, which developing prototypes, instruments, pathfinders, and demonstration systems to address the country's challenging problems. We engage with potential customers during concept development, evolve to project definition, fabrication and execution, and support the transition of new technology and capability to industry partners. Our team develops the advanced prototypes that will inform the next generation of ground and space-based sensors. The Mechanical Design Engineer will design and develop mechanical systems such as space imaging payloads, lasercom, electronics packaging, mechanisms, opto-mechanical systems, and ground support equipment. Key Functions Design and analyze mechanical systems for laboratory, ground, air, and space applications. Assemble and test mechanical systems. Engage with stakeholders to develop requirements and interfaces. Work independently, and under the direction of systems engineering, project management, and scientists. Work with other engineers to solve multi-disciplinary problems. This position is available as a Senior Member of Technical Staff or a Research Engineer Qualifications Required for Senior Member of Technical Staff Bachelors of Science in a STEM field or equivalent 5 or more years of relevant work experience in mechanical design and analysis Expertise in using CAD modeling tools such as Solidworks, Creo, or NX Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) Demonstrated experience developing mechanical parts, assemblies and mechanical systems Demonstrated experience performing stress analysis of structures and mechanical elements, using classical hand methods and design-level Finite Element Analysis such as Solidworks Simulation Limited (10%) travel may be required This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance Preferred for Senior Member of Technical Staff Master's degree in a STEM field or equivalent 5 or more years of increasing responsibility and related engineering experience Experience with Solidworks and Solidworks Simulation Experience with the development of airborne or spaceflight hardware and systems Experience with opto-mechanical design Experience with mechanism design Required for Research Engineer Same requirements as a Senior Member of Technical Staff noted above, in addition to: Master's degree in a STEM field or equivalent 8 or more years of relevant work experience in mechanical design and analysis Experience in a management and supervisory roles; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of customer and corporate staff Preferred for Research Engineer Same prefered skills as a Senior Member of Technical Staff noted above, in addition to: Advanced degree in a STEM field or equivalent 8 or more years of increasing responsibility and related engineering experience Equal Opportunity Commitment The Aerospace Corporation is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
