The basic purpose of this work is to operate, monitor, maintain and repair utility systems and equipment and that the power plant facility is operated and maintained safely and efficiently.The Utility Plant Operator position is considered to be an Essential Personnel as defined by and detailed in the contract between the University and the Classified Staff Union (CSU). Examples of Duties: Operate boilers and related auxiliary equipment by regulating controls, opening and closing valves, etc. in accordance with standard operating instruction and procedures and safety regulations;Operate, maintain and repair heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, including chilled water re-circulating pumps, chilled water condenser pumps, fire pumps, air compressors, air-supply and re-circulating fans, electric heating coils, electric cabinet unit heaters, electric baseboard radiation units, cooling coils and chilled water BTU meters, motors and refrigeration compressors;Operate, maintain and repair diesel generators and related equipment;Operate and maintain a sewerage and drainage system and neutralized acid waste system, including pressurized main drain system and associated equipment;Inspect machinery; read meters and gauges; perform tests on chilled water, heating water and sea water to control pollution and quality of water; start and stop equipment and machinery according to schedules;Operate, maintain and repair piping systems such as those for methane and carbon monoxide gas monitoring and evaluation;Maintain operating logs, records and reports on all equipment; draw stock and materials for maintenance and repairs; measure and report fuel levels to appropriate personnel;Implement the lubrication schedule for heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment and auxiliary equipment;Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks on all equipment under the responsibility of the Utility Plant;Perform rounds to ensure mechanical systems are operating properly;Perform or assist in making any necessary repairs to any campus equipment (including but not limited to plumbing fixtures, lighting, circuit breakers, building facades) or to make safe during hours outside normal working times;Checks, inspects and monitors various types of machinery, equipment;Responds to emergencies and breakdowns by evaluating equipment or system problems;Read meters and gauges at specified intervals to ensure proper temperature, pressure, fuel levels, water levels, etc.;Open and close valves and adjust controls to regulate fuel flow, airflow and water level to ensure safe and efficient operation of boilers;Check and/or monitor operating systems to detect faulty operating equipment, to determine necessary repairs, to notify appropriate personnel and/or to determine when to shut system down;Clean, maintain and/or lubricate power plant and related auxiliary equipment such as burners, pumps, filters, etc. to ensure safe and efficient operations;Escalate critical or emergency situations appropriately;Perform other duties as assigned. Working conditions may vary with specific work assignments. Some areas of the plant can be a noisy at times with sound levels reaching above 85 decibels. Hearing protection is available for those areas. Safety glasses and metatarsal safety shoes are required at all times in the plant. Gloves are required during certain operations. Face shield is required in addition to safety glasses when grinding. The employee will operate machines that use liquid coolant and may also be exposed to cast iron dust. The employees must be able to spend the entire work shift on their feet within the plant environment. Some outdoor work is required which includes work in conditions with abnormal temperatures. Employee works around material stacked overhead height. Conditions range from clean work to exposure to odors, fumes, drafts, wet conditions, dirt, grease, smoke, dust, noise, high temperatures and low frigid temperatures. These conditions range from severe to mild and can happen daily and in any combination. An Electromechanical Technician works in disagreeable weather conditions nearly 30% of the year. Employee must stand and walk, as well as handle parts, tools and equipment, gripping and grasping, on a frequent to constant basis.On an occasional to frequent basis, operator is required to lift/carry parts. Most weight moved is less than 30 lb. Although a few items do weigh more, a maximum lift of 50 lb. is all that is required. Standing, bending, pivoting, walking and reaching overhead are required during most of the shift. Climbing ladders, pulling wire through conduit, hanging fixtures and electrical components also requires a physical exertion. Lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, stretching, crawling and working in awkward and/or confined positions is frequent with any electromechanical technician. Some of the physical tasks include hanging gearboxes on top of machines, changing brakes or the motors on cranes. Mental and Visual Effort The functions of this job require the employee to be alert at all times. Working in a fast-paced environment as well as the repetitious nature of this job requires both mental and visual concentration. The technician must be able to work quickly to repair plant equipment so operations can resume. There are often high stress situations where the technician needs to be able to work under adverse conditions for long periods of time using intense mental and visual concentration. Good hand to eye coordination with a good sense of depth perception is required at all time. Technicians need to be able to distinguish colors and be capable of reading manuals, schematics, labels, and other printed materials. Adequate hearing is required to diagnose problems with machines and equipment. Mental and visual concentration is needed to prevent injury to oneself, fellow workers and/or damage to the product. The use of any equipment or tools requires the employee to be alert at all times.If employee does not have a valid license from either of these states, the determination of acceptable vision will be made by the Safety Department on an individual basis. Working Environment and Physical Efforts: Most of this job is performed in an indoor shop environment. The temperature range can be from 100 degrees in the summer to about 50 degrees in the winter. Examples of the duties include, but are not limited to: Performing track maintenance, track repairs and installations consisting of driving spikes into ties with spike maul; pulling spikes with claw bar; installing and removing rail anchors; sliding, placing, and aligning tie plates under rail; cutting rails with rail saw, and lifting rails with manual track jacks. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Prolonged periods of standing and bending required. Some medium lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 35 lbs. of force occasionally is required.
