Job Description - Medical Assistant

Primary Function:

Responsible for various patient care activities, assisting with various procedures under the supervision and direction of a physician and assisting administrative office personnel.

Reports to: Director of Nursing, Medical Director and Administrator

Essential Job Functions:

1. Performs various nursing procedures and under supervision of the physician and assists physician in examinations, as requested.
2. Maintains clinical supply inventory, cleanliness of exam rooms, instrument sterilization and related equipment.
3. Assists patients as needed for examinations.
4. Properly disposes of contaminated and disposable items according to OSHA regulations.
5. Provides educational information and instruction to patients and clients.
6. Maintains medical records according to office procedures.
7. Assists and performs those procedures contained in the clinical policy and procedures manual, consistent with licensure.

Core Competencies:

1. Minimum education: High school degree and training in medical assisting.
2. Minimum experience: One to two years.
3. Required certification/licensure:

• Prefer certification as medical assistant.
• Industrial spriometric technician, as necessary.
• Industrial audiometric technician, as necessary.
• CPR and first aid training or instructor.
• Certified for qualitative respirator fit testing, as necessary.
• Blood borne pathogen trainer.

4. Special knowledge, skills and abilities

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Extensive communications with patients, physicians and clients.
• Required judgment/action that impacts the coordination of office activities for patient treatment.

5. Physical demands:

• Extensive or prolonged standing and walking.
• Occasional stooping, bending, reaching and crouching positions.
• Lifts or transfers of patients, infrequently.
• Use of hands, adequate vision and hearing.
• Lift file boxes.
• Stairs

6. Working conditions:

• Regularly exposed to blood borne pathogens.
• Occasional exposure to infectious and contagious disease.
• Regular hours, occasional overtime.
• Medical office and manufacturing environments.
