Job Description

Overview:

Your gifts as a chaplain and leader dovetail with the specialties of a collaborative healthcare team. In this open and caring environment, you'll lend spiritual care to patients, families, volunteers and hospital employees and oversee our ACPE training program.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as an ordained minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) - Oregon Synod or one of the ELCA's Full Communion Partners.

  • Provide strategic and operational oversight of spiritual care services at:

    • Emanuel Medical Center

    • Randall Children's Hospital

    • Unity Center for Behavioral Health

  • Direct the ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at Emanuel Medical Center, ensuring compliance with ACPE standards and fostering excellence in chaplaincy education.

  • Report directly to the Bishop of the Oregon Synod and the Pastoral Care Consultation Committee, which governs the ACPE training programs.

  • Ensure alignment of spiritual care services and CPE training with both Legacy Health's mission and the values of the ELCA.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Seminary-educated with a Masters of Divinity required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years in spiritual care with previous management experience preferably in a Level I Trauma healthcare environment for adults and children.
  • Experience with using everyday technology tools (e.g., email, electronic charting, word processing, voicemail, internet/intranet) to access, organize and store job related information.
  • Working knowledge of adult education theory, the accreditation standards of ACPE, and their application in the clinical healthcare setting.

Skills:

  • Critical thinking and decisive judgment.
  • Ability to work unsupervised or with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Licensure:
  • ACPE Certified Educator certification (required).

  • Board certification by one of the recognized Spiritual Care Cognate Groups, such as:

    • Association of Professional Chaplains (APC)

    • Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels (CASC/ACSS)

    • National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC)

    • Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC)

  • Endorsement by the Division of Specialized Ministry of the ELCA (Chicago, IL), and

  • Ordination and a recognized call by the Oregon Synod of the ELCA, or

  • Endorsement for specialized ministry by one of the ELCA's Full Communion Partners (e.g., Episcopal Church, United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), etc.).
