JOB SUMMARY Working under supervision, the Hospital Pharmacy Technician is responsible for reviewing, processing, preparing, filing, labeling and dispensing of medications and supplies as allowable by law and in accordance with organizational and departmental policies. This is a PRN/per-diem position to be scheduled, as needed, primarily 1st shift (mornings) or 2nd shift (evenings) and rotating weekends at the William P. Clemens Jr. University Hospital (CUH) Inpatient Pharmacy on the UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center campus in Dallas. PRN/per-diem positions are not benefit-eligible. EXPERIENCE and EDUCATION Minimum requirement of: Two (2) years of work experience as a licensed pharmacy technician; OR Current pharmacist students upon completion of 2nd year of an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy. Candidates with previous pharmacy technician or intern experience in an hospital or inpatient setting will be given preferred consideration. Sterile compounding (IV) certification accredited by ACPE for inpatient, infusion and/or specified retail environments is a minimum requirement. Registration with Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) as a Registered Technician or Pharmacist Intern is required and national certification with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is preferred. Must have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA). High school diploma or equivalent is required. Basic computer skills, data entry, filing is essential. Ability to communicate in English (speaking, reading, and writing) is required. Must have good general health and stress coping ability. Position requires moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs), reaching, bending, crouching, etc. JOB DUTIES Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental and infection control standards. Coordinates daily workflow in assigned area and provides leadership to other technicians. Performs extemporaneous compounding. Repackages bulk medications into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure. Enters charges and credits and restocks returns. Makes good decisions, accepts responsibilities, and maintains competency in multiple areas. Accepts duty as knowledge and training resource for specific areas of responsibility and works to improve these areas. Fills all orders, floor stock, and fill lists. Performs IV calculations and prepares al IV admixture using proper aseptic technique. Handles all intravenous chemotherapy. Delivers medication on time. Provides prompt and courteous service. Receives incoming calls and prioritizes bases on urgency or nature of requests. Audits and signs out all controlled substances in accordance with state and federal guidelines and organizational policies. Identifies and corrects discrepancies and reports unusual usage pattern and trends. Completes medication area inspections. Removes and documents expired medications. Orders, manages and monitors drug inventory in fiscally responsible manner and is cognizant of appropriate PAR levels in medication storage areas. Enhances personal growth and development. Participates in educational programs, in-services and meetings. Participates in new employee orientation and training. Treats co-workers and organizational and departmental property and resources with respect. Maintains clean, orderly and stocked work environment. Works and problem solves with minimal supervision.
