Job Description Job Description Must be able to pass a 2G Plate test. A plate fitter is a skilled industrial tradesperson who lays out, positions, aligns, and fits heavy metal plates and structural steel components (e.g., I-beams, bulkheads) for welding or riveting. They interpret blueprints, use tools like cranes, grinders, and torches to prepare materials, ensuring structures like tanks, ships, or bridges meet specifications. Key Responsibilities Blueprint Interpretation: Study engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to plan the layout, sequence of operation, and material requirements. Layout and Marking: Lay out reference points, curves, and holes on metal stock using tools like scribes, compasses, soapstone, and punch tools. Fabrication and Fitting: Assemble, align, and fit metal parts together using jacks, turnbuckles, pry bars, and cranes to prepare them for welding or assembly. Cutting and Shaping: Use acetylene torches, shears, grinding tools, and press brakes to cut, bevel, or shape metal pieces. Tack Welding: Perform preliminary welding (tack welding) to hold parts in place before final structural welding. Quality Inspection: Verify finished assemblies against blueprints using measuring devices like tape measures and squares to ensure accurate fit-up. Required Skills and Qualifications Technical Proficiency: Ability to read blueprints and understand welding symbols. Tools Knowledge: Experience with oxy-fuel torches, grinders, cranes, and hand-cutting tools. Mathematical Skills: Basic geometry and trigonometry knowledge to calculate layout dimensions. Physical Ability: Strong physical condition for heavy lifting, climbing, and working in tight spaces or at heights. Work Environment Industries: Commonly employed in shipbuilding, structural steel fabrication, heavy machinery manufacturing, and construction. Conditions: Often work indoors in large, noisy workshops, or outdoors on construction sites, potentially requiring travel or long hours.
